I Was Done Teaching Yoga
People came to class feeling stressed, achy, stiff… and they left feeling relaxed, supple and good to go.
So what’s the problem?
They came in the next week exactly like the previous week: stressed, achy and stiff. I wanted to see real progress, in them and in myself – otherwise why bother?
I had been experimenting and following a Canadian yoga teacher online for a while. She did these small simple movements, parts of yoga poses, building blocks mostly, instead of full poses. I was learning a lot about movement in my body.
So I signed up for her Therapeutic Yoga Intensive in Toronto. I hopped in my car and started to drive. By 2 hours in to the 9 hour drive, my hands resting on the steering wheel hurt so badly I was in tears. (Neuropathy from long-Lyme.)
I cried all the way to Toronto. Turning around wasn’t an option, though I considered it briefly.
I walked into a room of 30+ yogis and instantly felt at home. As Susi started teaching and having us move, my body was transforming. The movements I could barely do at all were the most transformative.
I began to understand “less is more” though that’s another email.
At the end of my 5 days, I wasn’t ready to leave. There were 4 more days of the program that I hadn’t signed up for. The shared house I rented with other students had someone coming to take my room.
I slept on the crappy sofa those last 4 days so I could stay and learn more.
By the time I drove home to Maine, I was pain-free!! Even the neuropathy in my hands was not an issue as I drove! I was astonished.
I came home with new props and a completely different view of teaching yoga and what was possible for myself and my clients.
I signed up for her 3-year certification program in Calgary Canada right away. I never looked back.
